The Story

Hello, I’m Sarah-Jane, or as I’m better known ‘S-J’.

I started embroidering more for people before my brand existed, after finishing my degree. I’d just had my first child and was on maternity leave from the Primary School I taught in.

I’ve been embroidering actively across four decades and I was originally taught how to embroider by my Grandmother. Together we explored locally in Herefordshire and reflected on the nature around us by creating wonderful designs with fabric and threads, it's a time I will never forget.

I have slowly perfected my distinctive technique, using vibrant colour, tradition art and yet a modern clean style. I still love drawing my inspiration from nature when designing my own unique hoops, flowers and bees are definitely my favourite to use.

I have a small corner of my dining room set up with all my craft materials, I often dream of a craft room all to myself one day!

I’m often asked where the name came from. The name ‘snoringdori’ stands as a reminder of my beloved Golden Retriever ‘Dori’ who is now at eternal rest and I much rather think of her as sleeping than gone. ‘Dori’ also means gift, which I thought was quite appropriate for a small businesses like mine.

In August 2020, I opened my Etsy shop to showcase my work. It was a decision that was by no means taken lightly because of both financial and time constraints.

For the last few years I have increasingly taken on commissions. I enjoy creating all the unique commissions, these mainly come in through my Instagram and Facebook messages and now increasingly through Etsy.

When I am commissioned for a piece the ideas come from the client with their thoughts of special memories, family or occasion; every design is unique and special to them. The winter collection of families in the snow, holding presents or standing around a Christmas tree, have been a favourite design for many.

Crafting the hoops is a joy for me, I get to remain quiet, shy and behind the scenes but help others express themselves when I produce something for them to give to someone. It’s a wonderful feeling, especially when I get lovely messages and feedback on my Etsy.

I hope you find my hoops as beautiful as so many do and find space in your home to enjoy a little piece of very personal, handmade art from @snoringdori.
